Tree lopping Brisbane-wide means cutting a tree back: taking out deadwood, lifting the canopy off a roof, reducing height, or dropping the whole thing. Done properly it is pruning to the Australian Standard by a qualified arborist, and the price depends on the size of the tree, how the crew gets up it and what is underneath. All Sites Stump Grinding coordinates the tree work with our arborist crew and grinds the stump on the same visit, so you make one call.
We get asked about it every week, usually by someone standing under a gum that has got too big for the block. Half the time what they need is a tidy prune. The other half it is a removal and a stump. Here is what the word covers, what moves the price, when council gets a say, and who should be holding the saw.

What does tree lopping actually mean?
In Brisbane “lopping” means whatever the person saying it wants it to mean. Trim the branches off the gutters. Take the top out. Cut it down. To an arborist, lopping has a narrower and uglier meaning: cutting branches back to stubs, or topping a tree flat, without regard to where the tree will heal. That is why the trade hates the word. Lopped trees throw out a mess of weak regrowth from the cut stubs, the stubs rot, and in five years you have a bigger, more dangerous tree than you started with.
So when you ring us for tree lopping, what you get is pruning done to AS 4373 (the Australian Standard for pruning amenity trees). The crew removes deadwood, reduces the canopy by cutting back to a living lateral branch, or dismantles the tree in sections if it is coming out. Same outcome you wanted, without wrecking the tree.
| What people ask for | What it really is | When it is the right call |
|---|---|---|
| “Lop the dead bits out” | Deadwooding | Big gums over the house, driveway or pool. Dead limbs are the ones that drop in a storm. |
| “Lift it off the roof / gutters” | Crown lifting and clearance pruning | Branches touching the house, scraping the shed, shading the solar panels. |
| “Take the top out” | Crown reduction (done properly) or topping (done badly) | Reduction is fine on the right species. Topping a gum is never the right call. |
| “Thin it out” | Crown thinning | Dense camphor laurels and figs where wind load or light is the problem. |
| “Just get rid of it” | Removal, then stump grinding | Dead, dangerous, cracked, in the way of a build, or a declared weed like Chinese elm. |
When is lopping the right call, and when is it a removal?
Prune when the tree is healthy and the problem is where the branches are. Remove when the problem is the tree itself: a hollow trunk, a split fork, roots lifting the slab, a gum dying from the top down, or a weed species that keeps coming back. A good climber can tell you which in two minutes on the ground.
The job we have booked at Eastern Heights, out in Ipswich, is a typical one. Two mature gums the owner wants deadwooded and trimmed back, and two palms that have outgrown the yard and are coming out altogether. The gums get a climber on ropes and stay. The palms get dropped, and the two palm stumps get ground on the same visit so there is nothing left to trip over or feed the cockroaches. One quote, one day, one invoice.
The jobs we turn away are the ones where someone wants a 25 metre gum “topped” to half its height. We will not do it, and neither will any arborist worth hiring. The alternatives are a proper reduction, a removal, or living with it. Our southside tree lopping and stump guide goes through the species where that argument comes up most.
How much does tree lopping cost in Brisbane?
There is no flat rate, and anyone who quotes you one over the phone has not looked at the tree. Every lopping quote is built from the same handful of things:
- Size and species. A 6 metre lilly pilly is an hour. A 25 metre spotted gum is a day with a crew.
- How we get up it. A climber on ropes costs the least. An elevated work platform is faster on some jobs but needs room to park. A crane is for the trees with nowhere to lower timber.
- What is underneath. Lowering limbs over a tiled roof, a pool or a neighbour’s carport takes rigging and time. Open lawn is quick.
- Access for the chipper. Everything that comes down has to go somewhere. A side gate wide enough for a wheelbarrow means carrying; a driveway means the chipper backs up to the tree.
- Powerlines. Trees within reach of the lines need an authorised crew. Energex explains who can and cannot work near their lines on their trees and powerlines page, and the short version is: not you, and not a general gardener.
- The stump. Removals leave one. Grinding a typical single domestic stump starts from $250, with the surface roots chased and the chips raked off, and there is a multi-stump discount of up to 50 per cent when several come out together. The full breakdown is on our stump grinding cost page.
Send a photo of the tree with something for scale and we can usually give you a price range the same day, then confirm it on site.

Do I need council approval to lop a tree in Brisbane?
Sometimes. Brisbane City Council protects a lot of vegetation under its Natural Assets Local Law, and the council’s protected vegetation permits page is blunt about it: it is an offence to interfere with protected vegetation without permission, even on your own land. Trees in waterway corridors, bushland areas, koala habitat and on heritage sites are the usual ones caught. Some light pruning inside your own boundary is exempt; removal and work on significant trees generally is not.
Ipswich, Logan and Moreton Bay councils each have their own version. The arborist checks the overlay before anything is cut, because the fine lands on the owner and the contractor both. If you want the detail by council, our group has the council tree rules explained here, and we covered the stump side in do you need council approval to grind a stump. Short answer on stumps: once the tree is lawfully down, grinding what is left is not regulated work.
Tree lopping Brisbane: who should I call?
A qualified arborist (Certificate III in arboriculture or better) with public liability insurance and a climber who works on ropes, not a ladder. Ask for the certificate of currency before they start. No certificate, no job.
Here is how it works with us. All Sites Stump Grinding does the stumps, and the climbing is done by our arborist crew at Dynamic Tree Solutions, the same company behind this one. You ring one number. The arborist quotes the tree, we quote the stump, and the tree is cut to a height that suits the grinder rather than left as a metre-high post. On most residential jobs the stump is ground the same day the tree comes down. The tree lopping and stump removal page has the full run-down of what is included.
That covers all of Brisbane and Ipswich. On the southside the regulars are camphor laurels and old gums on the big pre-war blocks. Out our way in Forest Lake it is cocos palms and umbrella trees that were planted too close to the house in the nineties. Across Ipswich, where the Eastern Heights job is, it is gums on acreage and the odd Norfolk pine that has got away from everyone. We ground three palm stumps in a Camira backyard yesterday, in through the carport, which is about as tight as access gets.
What about storm damage and emergency work?
Different job. If a tree is on the house, across the driveway or hanging in the powerlines, that is a make-safe, not a lopping quote. Ring us, get people clear of it, and if a line is involved ring Energex first. Our emergency tree services page explains what happens when you call, and the stump still gets ground once the mess is cleared. If the tree is still standing and you are nervous about it, deadwooding before the storm season starts is the best money you will spend on the yard this year; our storm season checklist covers what to look for.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between tree lopping and pruning?
Pruning is cutting a tree to the Australian Standard (AS 4373) so it stays healthy: removing deadwood, reducing the canopy back to living branches, or lifting it clear of a roof. Lopping, in the arborist's sense, is cutting branches to stubs or topping the tree flat, which causes weak regrowth and decay. When Brisbane residents say lopping they usually mean pruning, and that is what a qualified crew will do.
How much does tree lopping cost in Brisbane?
It depends on the size and species of the tree, how the crew gets up it (ropes, elevated work platform or crane), what is underneath it, chipper access and whether powerlines are involved. There is no reliable flat rate. If the tree is removed, grinding a typical single domestic stump starts from $250, with a multi-stump discount of up to 50 per cent. Send a photo for a same-day price range.
Do I need council approval for tree lopping in Brisbane?
Sometimes. Brisbane City Council protects vegetation under its Natural Assets Local Law, and it is an offence to interfere with protected vegetation without a permit, even on your own property. Trees in waterway corridors, bushland, koala habitat and heritage sites are usually covered. Ipswich, Logan and Moreton Bay have their own rules. A qualified arborist checks the overlay before cutting.
Can I lop a tree near powerlines myself?
No. Energex says vegetation near powerlines must be handled by a professional arborist or tree trimmer, and work within the exclusion zone around the lines needs an authorised crew. Energex trims trees near its own network, usually at no charge. Never put a ladder, a pole saw or yourself anywhere near a powerline.
Should I remove the stump at the same time as the tree?
Yes, where you can. When All Sites Stump Grinding coordinates the job the tree is cut to a height that suits the grinder and the stump is usually ground on the same visit, so the yard is only disturbed once and you avoid a second call-out. The stump is ground 200 to 300 mm below ground with the surface roots chased, then backfilled.
Who does the climbing for All Sites Stump Grinding?
The tree work is done by the qualified arborist crew at Dynamic Tree Solutions, the company All Sites Stump Grinding trades under. They climb on ropes or use an elevated work platform or crane depending on the tree, carry public liability insurance, and hand the stump over to the grinder once the tree is down. You deal with one contact for the whole job.
