Forest Lake was built as one estate in the 1990s and the street trees and backyard plantings went in at the same time. Thirty years on, a lot of them have outgrown the block, and the stumps left behind when they come out are what we spend our Forest Lake days on. This page covers what those jobs look like, what they cost and how to book one.

What stump grinding jobs do you do in Forest Lake?

Mostly single stumps in front and back yards after a tree removal, and the odd row of them when a hedge or a line of cocos palms comes out. The common ones here are the estate-era plantings: gums and ironbarks that got too big for a 600 square metre block, leopard trees and jacarandas lifting driveways, lilly pilly hedges and cocos palms along fence lines, and the occasional old mango or camphor laurel on the Inala side. Blocks in Forest Lake usually have a side gate and a concrete path, so the compact grinder walks straight in. Where a stump sits beside a driveway or a fence, we grind it flush and chase the surface roots so the concrete stops lifting and the mower stops hitting it.

A recent Forest Lake job is a fair picture of the usual request: two stumps in a front garden, the bigger one around 35 to 40 centimetres across, easy access from the driveway. The owner wanted both ground out with the roots so the area could be levelled and turfed. Quoted from two photos, done in a morning, chips piled in one spot as asked so they could be spread on the garden beds. Nothing dramatic, which is the point.

How much does stump grinding cost in Forest Lake?

The same as everywhere else we work. From $250 for a typical domestic stump, and a multi-stump discount of up to 50 per cent when there are several on the one visit. There is no travel charge for Forest Lake or the suburbs around it; you are on our doorstep. What moves the price is the diameter, how hard the timber is (ironbark takes longer than a palm), how deep you need it and how we get the machine to it. Do I need Brisbane City Council approval to grind a stump in Forest Lake?

No. Forest Lake is in the Brisbane City Council area, and once a tree has been lawfully removed the stump is yours to deal with. The approval question belongs to the tree, not the stump: some trees in Brisbane are protected under the council’s vegetation rules, and if the tree is still standing it is worth checking before anyone cuts it. We wrote up the detail in do you need council approval to grind a stump. If the tree does need to come down first, our arborist crew covers Forest Lake from the same yard, and the stump goes in the same booking.

What happens to the grindings, and what about fire ants?

You get a hole full of chips. Most Forest Lake customers have us rake the chips back into the hole and heap them slightly, because they settle over a few weeks; then you top with soil and turf or plant. If you would rather keep them for the garden, say so and we will pile them where you want them. Forest Lake sits inside the South East Queensland fire ant biosecurity zone, so chips and soil should stay on your property unless they are moved under the fire ant movement rules. We follow the same rules with our own loads, which is one reason we leave the chips with you rather than carting them around the city.

How soon can you get to Forest Lake?

Usually within the week, and often sooner if we are already working in Inala, Richlands or Springfield that day. Working out of Ellen Grove means a Forest Lake stump is a 10-minute drive, not a half-day round trip, so small jobs that other operators push to the back of the queue get done. You do not need to be home as long as the gate is open and the dog is inside; we text when we are on the way and send a photo of the finished hole.

We also cover the wider Brisbane southside, Ipswich from Springfield through to Brassall, and the northside. The full list is on our service areas page.

Can you grind a stump in a Forest Lake backyard with a narrow side gate?

Yes. The compact self-propelled grinder fits through a standard side gate and handles steps and paths. The larger machine needs about 900 mm of clear access, so a driveway or double gate.

Do I need council approval to remove a stump in Forest Lake?

No. Forest Lake is in Brisbane City Council, and once a tree has been lawfully removed the stump needs no approval. If the tree is still standing, check whether it is protected before it is cut.

How deep do you grind stumps in Forest Lake?

200 to 300 mm below ground as standard, which is enough to turf, pave or plant a garden bed over. We go deeper if you are planting a new tree in the same spot, and chase the surface roots that lift driveways and paths.
